Festivals are about bringing people together within a community to celebrate. The festival should focus on a characteristic or aspect of the community and its traditions. Often associated with music, the festival can be about many aspects of community, music, dance, comedy, food & wine, culture, religion and more.
Putting together the right entertainment for your festival depends very much on your target market or audience. The age, the demographic, the hobbies or areas of interest. What appeals to over 50’s is very different to those under 18. What is the “vibe” you aim to create. Relaxed or high energy? Dance floor or food & wine?
Always arrange entertainment at festivals into “zones”! Create “areas” where people can enjoy or “experience” a particular vibe or style of entertainment or activity. By creating different “zones” of experience it encourages exploration or movement through to the entire festival site. this “Flow” creates buzz, and enjoyment for the audience. It also prevents any one “zone” becoming stale, as people continue to move through and experience, then move on to the next.
Festivals will always be attached to great live music (in our mind). If it doesn’t have cracking music.. it may only be a fete! Only joking!! there are many festivals with their “roots” elsewhere. Comedy and those revolving around food and wine . Cultural festivals and many others dedicated to the movements of the stars, the seasons, the harvest and more…
However f or most us born after the 60s, the word “festival” will always be attached to great music and GOOD TIMES!
Most of the big Festivals involve a main stage and some seriously good recording artists. They bring BUZZ with their big name, and generally allow the event manager to leverage their “brand” to help sell tickets. There are again a few main groups of artist to consider.
These are generally represented by bands or singers that had top 40 hits in the previous century. Recording Artists from the 80’s , 90’s and early 00’s are represented here. They often perform in groups for corporate events or festivals, combining a number of them in to a SUPER BAND
