Pete is a Melbourne based saxophonist (alto/baritone/tenor/soprano) who has been performing professionally with various ensembles around town for the last 12 years. Recently his group PETE MITCHELL QUARTET released their debut CD QUIRKY through move records, which is available Australia wide at good record stores and has received positive airplay and reviews.

Pete is a Melbourne based Saxophonist (plays all Saxes) who has been performing professionally with various ensembles around Australia & overseas for the last 20 years. Apart from performing original material at Jazz Clubs such as Bennett’s Lane& Dizzys Jazz Bar,he plays a wide variety of jazz standards & popular music at many weddings, corporate functions, tafe’s / university’s, clubs / pubs, shopping centre’s (roving acoustic) & product launches etc.
Styles range from modern jazz, funky acid jazz, swing, bossa nova, ballads, funk & latin with a splash of flamenco.
Pete & his musicians are well presented, stylish & classy, sophisticated & offer a very diverse repertoire. This ranges from tunes made popular by such greats as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Michael Buble (who he played with at The Logies!), Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Stan Getz, Antonio Carlos Jobim etc. to more recent jazzy renditions of commercial songs by Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins & Pink Floyd.
Pete works in Duo / Trio / Quartet / Quintet settings & can add *vocals too if required. Instrumentation can include Saxophone, Guitar, Piano, Double or Electric Bass, Drums, Trumpet, Vocals etc, performed by some of Melbourne’s best musicians. Some past performances include the Launch of the Lexus Centre for Eddie McGuire & the Collingwood Football Club, the St.Kilda Football club Foundation dinner & numerous appearances at the Melbourne Grand Prix.
Pete also tours & records with 2 time Aria award winning band Melbourne Ska Orchestra which has toured the UK, Canada, New Zealand , USA & Turkey including performances at world famous festivals such as Glastonbury, Edinburgh & the Montréal Jazz Festival with audiences of up to 60,000 people! (4 Aria Nominations & winner again in 2019.)
Other career highlights have included guesting on a number of occasions with John Butler & playing in Michael Buble’s band at the Logie awards. He’s performed with Tina Arena & has been touring with Aussie rock band Chocolate Starfish (on Sax & Guitar) playing the INXS Kick album in its entirety. Jamming with & performing for members of the Buena Vista Social Club , a lesson with Branford Marsalis & an amazing night when Aussie jazz legend Don Burrows sat in with Pete’s trio.
He has also released his own modern funky jazz CD . “Quirky” by Pete Mitchell Quartet.
