The Irwell Street String Band are the sweetest string band in town, playing favourites and curiosities from the 1920s through to the 1950s. You can expect songs made famous by Peggy Lee, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra – but played with a singular twist! This band focusses on the music and lyrics, which make them captivating to listen to as an event highlight and also perfect to set the background mood for your guests.
A quartet, but easily split into a duo (voice and guitar) or trio (voice, guitar and bass), the band is led by Melbourne vocalist Hetty Kate – who has only recently returned to Melbourne from 3 years of touring in North America, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Switzerland, France and Germany.
This band were originally drawn together through a love of sweet songs, ukuleles, champagne and long brunches, and often draw comparison to the great vocal/guitarist combos of yesteryear, such as Peggy Lee & Dave Barbour, Julie London & Barney Kessell or Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass.
Having released two albums in the last three years, they are regularly played on BBC Radio 2 (UK) and ABC Jazztrack (AU) as well as performing at The Wangaratta Jazz Festival, The Melbourne Ukulele Festival, The Eltham Jazz Festival, Jamieson Jazz Festival, Broadbeach Jazz Festival and more.
