Biography

The Sousaphonics is a quintet from New South Wales who present music from styles that have found their most prominent expression in the Carnivals of the world.

The Sousaphonics want to capture the collective spirit that gives rise to these festivities and believe the ubiquitous nature of their instruments means they are played the world over in many different styles ranging from Nigerian afro-beat, Mardi Gras and Carnivale marches and sambas to circus music and Balkan folk.

The Sousaphonics appropriate music that is both uplifting, appeals in first listening and is inherently adaptable for active audience-participation’s. The festival spirit is about creating a continuity between audience and band.

Festivals require participation for their success, and their various musics reflect that. That core of accessibility and the joy of celebration through creation of music is what the Sousaphonics aim to present.
