Biography
In recent years Kelly has worked as a producer and performer, working with his solo combo and leading various Models reunions. The enigmatic Kelly has been cagey about the imminent release of new material, purported to be a defining work featuring his unique vocal and guitar stylings. Kelly and Models 2010 induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame is a fitting endorsement for one the country’s most adventurous musical journeymen.
Models’ singer/guitarist Sean Kelly began his career in Melbourne punk-rock outfit The Spred.
After just one show the band scored a recording deal with Suicide Records. After a name-change to Teenage Radio Stars and tours with The Boys Next Door, JAB and The Negatives, Models were born of a merger between Teenage Radio Stars and JAB. With Kelly at the helm, Models became regulars on the Australian live scene and developed a reputation for dynamic and inspired live performances. Their edgy synth-based pop attracted the attention of several record companies; they eventually signed with Mushroom records and released their first album AlphaBravoCharlieDeltaEchoFoxtrotGolf in 1979.
Throughout the eighties, with classic releases such as ‘Cut Lunch’ and ‘Local and/or General’, Models’ sound became more eclectic. in 1983, with the inclusion of James Freud on bass, they scored their first top 40 hit with ‘I Hear Motion’. In 1985 Models went on to top the charts with their platinum-selling album Out of Mind, Out of Sight.
After successful tours of Europe and the US, Models went into hiatus in 1987. Kelly, having relocated to Sydney from Melbourne, joined forces with members of INXS and formed the acclaimed Absent Friends featuring singer Wendy Matthews. Absent Friends won and ARIA Award for best Australian single ‘I Don’t Wanna Be With Nobody But You’.
