Biography
Comedian
Luke McGregor likes to laugh with people, even if it is about himself.
Some comedians deliberately adopt an awkward persona when performing as a kind of mask to hide their insecurities, but when Luke McGregor takes to the stage, there’s no doubting he’s genuinely terrified.
He stumbles over words, fails to hide micro-winces and occasionally drifts into a deer-in-the-headlights expression. Despite (or perhaps because of) this, the openly dorky Tasmanian is one of the most exciting comics in Australia today.
His first solo show, My Soul Mate Is Out of My League, won the best newcomer award at this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival. A clutch of high-profile comedians immediately began championing the up-and-comer to anyone who would listen, and he has since scored a regular spot on ABC’s Dirty Laundry, featured in the TV series It’s a Date and is co-starring in the coming feature Border Protection Squad alongside Peter Helliar, Dave Hughes and Lachy Hulme, among others. McGregor has also just picked up a role in Utopia, the new series from the Working Dog team.
Not bad for someone who fell into comedy by accident. Five years ago he was at a Raw Comedy gig for aspiring stand-ups to support a housemate when an entrant pulled out. On a whim, McGregor took the spot with zero preparation.
