Biography

“Hetty Kate’s voice overflows with a natural musicality.” Richard Fields 3CR Radio

Hetty Kate is one of Australian jazz luminary James Morrison’s favourite singers, and has graced stages from New Zealand to New York. From classic, elegant sounds as a duo through to fronting a hot 40’s swing band, she is sure to entrance your guests.

Known for her pure tone, timing and elegance, Hetty Kate has quickly become one of Melbourne’s most popular jazz vocalists. With her classic voice, Hetty is often compared to the iconic swing singers of the 1940s and 50s, a young Peggy Lee or Doris Day, and has been cited as “one of the best swing-style vocalists on the current scene..” by prominent jazz researcher, author and critic Will Friedwald (NYC, 2015).

Now dividing her time between Europe and Australia, Hetty has spent the last two years as part of James Morrison’s quintet, and is the featured vocalist in his symphony concert ‘The A to Z of Jazz’. This award winning concert has seen her sing with the Melbourne, Tasmanian and Sydney Symphony Orchestras as well as the Christchurch, Auckland and Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Hetty has released eight albums, with two new albums on the way for 2016. Her latest album is released through ABC Jazz / Universal and distributed in Australia, New Zealand and Japan. She has dazzled audiences in North and South America, Asia and Europe and has been invited to perform for festivals in Korea, America, Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Other credits to her name include representing the Melbourne Racing Carnival as the Face of Caulfield 2012, a successful modeling career, MC for the Stonnington Jazz Festival (2014-2015) and appearing as Ava Gardner in Eric McCusker’s acclaimed musical ‘Ava at the End of the World’ in 2014.

Always surrounded by the very best musicians Australia has to offer, Hetty is equally comfortable performing as part of a duo, leading her swinging quintet or fronting a big band. With a large repertoire of classics and curios from The Great American Songbook, she has provided the entertainment and musical soundtrack for many of Australia’s premiere events (examples include Helpmann Awards, Mercedes, Chrysler, PwC). Venues include the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne Recital Centre, Hamer Hall, Bennetts Lane and more.

“A charismatic and technically gifted vocalist..” Chris May – All About Jazz (USA) 2011
