DJ Athol

Kicking off his musical career at the ripe age of 14, Athol played the drums and sang in various funk, rock and indie bands, as well as some March Drumming on the side. Which is why it’s no wonder his love for a great beat and rhythm section is prominent in the music he plays.

For the past 16 years his DJ’ing has taken him through a myriad of genres including New Jazz, Deep House, Techno, Tech House, Break Beat, Electro, Funk, Disco, Rare Groove, Nu Funk, Nu Disco and Old School Hip Hop, all with an undeniable underground accent. Therefore gaining him the respect of the local music community as a ‘Utility Dj’ that can play what’s required when needed. Throughout this time his vast appreciation to varying genres and cross-over styles has seen him with residencies in bars and clubs in Brisbane such as : The Press Club, Middle Level Empire, Moon Bar, Family, Alhambra, Mantra, Uber, Chalk Hotel, Milk Bar, and The Fox Hotel. Just to name a few.

Currently focussing on Nu Disco, Nu Funk and Funk & Disco Classics and playing congas to fill in the gaps, he still delivers with the same enthusiasm, passion and attention to detail as he always has. Although this time as Bruce Lee would say, “With Mean!”. Other side gigs as well as his residencies has given him the chance to play alongside and support some of this country’s and the worlds finest. Including; Bass Kleph (Syd), Rephrase (Syd), Pocket a.k.a PoxyMUSIC (Syd), Disco Pussy (Melb), Goodwill (Syd), Ewan Pearson (U.K), Damien Lazarus (U.K), and Slam (U.K), among others.

Not stopping at just playing in clubs, bars, venues and corporate, Athol’s always eager to play somewhere different. Whether it be Internet radio broadcasts and radio shows, fashion shows or clothing stores, as long as there’s a good beat and a fun time to be had.

Music is the universal language we can all understand in different ways, and whether it’s dropping dancefloor destroyers, or funkin’ it up at a party near you, Athol will continue to tell the story, with his own interpretation.
