Biography

Annie and the Armadillos play groove based music – a mixture of rhythm and blues, funk, bop, soul and jazz – the kind that’s intended to get people on their feet.

The group began in the mid 1990’S as a trio doing cover versions of ballads and torch songs. They became popular at local restaurants and had a regular gig at the former Gypsy Bar in Civic.

Vocalist Annette Sloane quickly realised that, as much as she liked the quieter repertoire, she wanted to sing to something with driving rhythms, something that people could dance to. So she approached bass player John Coates. Regarded by his peers as the ‘Groove Master’ of Canberra, John has been around the local scene since the early 1980’S, playing in bands from rock to reggae, jazz and blues.

Joining John in the rhythm section 2 & a half years ago, was drummer/percussionist Jonathon Jones. A highly sought after performer with many local bands, Jonathon Jones has also toured with Australian folk legend Eric Bogle. His colleague from those tours, guitarist Dave O’Neill, was the final addition to Annie and the Armadillos.

Dave is one of the most versatile string players in Australia, equally comfortable with everything from fiddle to mandolin, and he’s also an accomplished pianist.

They’re four musicians who have gelled into a successful performing unit who will no doubt entertain you and your guests and your next event.
